Gavin Lewis Johnson was born at 3:42 pm on Aug 12, 2013. Kristin was in labor for a grand total of 2 hrs and 15 minutes (approximately). He weighed 9 lbs, 1 oz, and was 21.5 inches.
It was by far the fastest delivery we’ve ever experienced. Kristin’s water broke at 1:15pm, at which time I got several successive phone calls and urgent texts during the middle of my first afternoon exam. I found a quick stopping point in the exam, and left it to a colleague to finish. I then ran out of the clinic and called her on the way home, when Kristin in a casual manner explained that her water broke but that nothing else seemed to be happening, and that the midwives would be expecting her sometime that afternoon but not quickly, and not to stress. I then decided to drive at a more reasonable speed (well, work is 30 min from home).
By the time I got home, the babysitter was already there, which struck me as odd if it was going to be a few hours before we were expected at the birthing center. Apparently, shortly after I got off the phone, Kristin started having major contractions. They started right as she was on the phone with the babysitter letting her know that we’d need her this afternoon, and thankfully she took a hint and came over immediately. We put the kids in her car and sent them off for a fun afternoon, and I then bundled Kristin up and drove (a little more quickly this time) to the birthing center.
After arriving to the birthing center, they spent some time taking vitals, looking at the monitor, checking her progress (she was dilated to 7 when she arrived), and deciding that yep, the baby was indeed coming. They got the room ready for her and we went in to get settled. We were probably in the room for about 20-30 minutes – just long enough for Kristin to find a comfortable position on the bed and relax, when the baby came. It was all over so quick it was hard to believe. Kristin had no tearing and no stitches, and we were able to leave and take Gavin home about 4 hours later.
We are all so excited to welcome Gavin to our home. It is so neat to see Kaela and Eliora interact with him, especially Kaela who is now getting old enough to understand things more. We are all excited to watch our new son and little brother grow, and get to know him!
Kristen, I need a phone call. I'm so excited for you. Please squish that baby for me.
