MOVING!!

imageWell, this week we just got notice of our first duty station! This fall the ARMY is going to be sending us to Ft. Stewart, which is right next to Savannah, GA. We’ll probably be heading out there sometime in late September or early October. When they first told me over the phone, I really didn’t even know that there was a Fort Stewart. Smile  To be honest, at this point we still know next to nothing about it, but we’re still excited. Everyone we’ve talked to has said that Savannah is lovely, and there are certainly worse posts that we could have gotten sent to. It will probably be a three year assignment, meaning that by the end of it we’ll have a seven year old! That’s a scary thought!

Right now we’ve already started looking at houses – having gotten sick of renting, we think this will be the site of our first home. Since it’s not for very long, however, we have to look for something that not only doesn’t cost too much, but that will be easy to rent or sell when we leave. Regardless, we’ve already started looking at listings and are hoping to make a trip out there soon to find a place, so that closing can all happen before we arrive.

Another exciting adventure is that this is going to be our first ARMY move. Yep – they pay people to come into our house and box everything up for us, then they move us and unpack us over there. We’re not allowed to pack anything ourselves (if we do, they waive liability for it). It’s going to be interesting – we’ll see how it goes.

In the meantime, we’ll be finishing up the residency, after which I’ll take my Officer Leadership Course (where they teach me how to salute and stuff like that), which happens to be right here in San Antonio. It’s going to be a busy few months, and then we’ll finally settle in to find out what it’s really like to live and work as a “normal” optometrist in the ARMY (being a resident doesn’t count as “normal” – they keep us as busy as they can). We’ll keep you all posted as we get more information.
