Avila

Another place we have visited  is Avila, where they have the largest lit up monument in the world, their complete city walls.  Another thing that Avila is famous for that it is Spain highest  city, and consequently one of the coldest.  It has nothing on New England, but they do get snow here maybe once or twice a year.  That was the first train we’ve taken that was not a Maximum Velocity train and it took about 2 hours to get there, even though it was closer than the places that have only taken us 25 minutes.

The walls were built around 1090 and are still complete.  They were very neat to see, they look so medieval (which they are). Smile  Towers, guard towers, and cars driving up the streets that were made for carts and horses.

We took a cute little train around the outside of the old city to see all the walls and saw some cool views, but didn’t take many pictures.

Every town has an incredible cathedral, and Avila was no exception.

The other thing that Avila is famous for are Yemas.  Literally that translates as egg yolks, but it has changed mostly to mean all kinds of sweets that the nuns of Avila make and sell and we got to enjoy some of them. We had a cream, chocolate, and wafer delicious confection, and some chocolate almonds and hedgehogs.  Aren’t they cute?  To let you know, we have also tried the traditional Yemas. They tasted like they had been make by mixing raw egg yolks and sugar and I hope that no one else ever buys them!
